PS3

In a bid to stay away from the huge Vista marketing machine that seems to be coping (more than) well enough by itself, I’ve focused on a more interesting story. It seems that due to recent bad sales of the PS3, Sony’s Senior Vice President has said that they may need to cut the price of the PS3 to boost sales.

After a disappointing launch for the PS3, with the Wii and previously released Xbox-360 consistently outselling the Japanese electronics giant, it was expected that a cut in price was on the cards. However, according to this CNet report, and myself included, nobody expected it quite so soon. [SHOW ME]

A work colleague of mine pointed out that he had seen a really big picture of a giant turtle. So we did a search and I turned up this monster! Not sure if it’s valid though.. [SHOW ME]

OK, maybe because I’m moving, or maybe because it’s Sunday. But the main reason for this post has purely got to be laziness. Yes, I have provided a link to somebody else’s news about some really weird vending machines that I read about recently on Digg. Check out the stranger side of what people are likely to part with pocket change with to buy.. [SHOW ME]

With standard sized tapes, the capacity of the LTO Ultrium has been increased by two to provide 800GB storage uncompressed, and 1.6TB assuming 2:1 compression. Also the transfer rate has been increased to a massive 120MB/s. This new standard is labelled LTO Ultrium 4. Read The Register article below for more info. [SHOW ME]

Apple’s latest innovation has been unveiled at the [Macworld expo] today. And what sort of blogger would I be without covering it?

The new device, available only with the US carrier singular initially has some nice features. Some of which include a proximity sensor that detects your head when you put the iphone to your ear, and an accelerometer that adapts the screen to how you’re holding it, much like a digital camera I would imagine. The device, being based on an iPod (obviously) will initially come in 4Gb and 8Gb flavours. It will also apparently fade out your music and fade in your call when the need arises. All in all it sounds like a nifty piece of kit - and the price tag will reflect this niftyness too at $499 to $599 when it is set to debut in the US in the summer. [SHOW ME]

I know it sounds like a new compilation album “not available in the shops.”

This collection of bad web design is useful if you’re thinking of doing a website and think animated gifs are “cool.” It’s also really useful if your website isn’t top-notch and you want to feel a bit better about your design skills.. However it’s main appeal is the sheer comedy value you get! What were these people THINKING??! [SHOW ME]

Face Research

I can’t comment on the validity of the research, as I obviously don’t know anything about the science, but the results produced from this website are pretty fun - created by two experimental psychologists who are currently studying at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. The particular section of the website I’m linking to is a face “averager.” You get a screen full of people’s faces and you can select two and merge them together. Not really tech, but I guess the formulas involved are technical.

There are other sections on the website that deal with prototyping and even the ability to upload your own images and create your own averages - not that I’ve tried that out yet. Check it out if you’re into this sort of thing, or even if you have a spare 5 minutes and want to play about with something a bit different and interesting. [SHOW ME]
