3 MS Dudes

You know the sort of thing - little games or text messages hidden within software that isn’t available without some sort of weird key-combination. However, they are not always only found in software. This one has been found on the Vista DVD by a bunch of people with nothing better to do than to examine a copy with a microscope! Who are these people by the way?? [SHOW ME]

Virtual Reality Bike

I discovered this article on Boing Boing just now.. Look at this crazy piece of technology from yesteryear. To think in days gone by that companies actually thought there was a market for this stuff - although at the time I’m sure it was all too easy to get caught up in the hysteria of the coming availability of the computer age. Even looking back that far (I was seven) the idea of computers being involved in everything we do was still so far off, I can imagine the idea of having tomorrow, today, being too much of an offer to pass up - hence the reason for this particular device.

However, when looking at some of the images, the really interesting thing for me is that I remember something similar to this - a sort of superimposed reality game. It was a golf game (and if anybody can help me out on it’s name I would appreciate it) that came along probably some years later, but I still thought then, as I’m sure the people did when this came out, that, “That’ll never catch on.” and at a price tag of a cool $20,000 it’s no wonder it didn’t.. It has been revealed that a hacking kit, written by a russian hacking group, has been sold for hackers to create their own malicious code, has been implicated in 10,000 website infections.

The kit which costs $1,000 has been used by hackers to infect legitimate websites, which if the latest patches are not installed in your web browser, results in the download of trojans to the user’s computer. It is thought to have resulted in 160,000 infections on PCs. [SHOW ME]

Jack PC

Now I think I’ve seen it all. Thin clients have been getting smaller and smaller - there’s a nice HP T5000 sat on my desk next to my laptop as I write this - and that’s a decent 8×10 inches. Now “Chip PC Technologies” has created a thin client that fits directly into an ethernet back box! So, rather than plugging an ethernet cable into the wall, you simply plug your mouse, keyboard and monitor in and your PC is complete and ready to go.

The other cool thing is all the ethernet connections go into the back of the device, and if your LAN supports PoE (or Power over Ethernet) then the device doesn’t even need to be plugged in! I think this is definitely the way of the future, and I might even suggest this solution for my company. I am wondering about the power button though - not too convenient if hidden behind a desk. Maybe the keyboard comes with a power switch.. According to the company’s specs, they are also looking to produce other systems that will fit into a back box, such as a 4 port switch and even a WiFi hotspot! [SHOW ME]

It appears the internet has officially had a face-lift - and like it’s predecessor, is starting off life in the academic and research fields first.

A link has been established from the East Coast to the West Coast of the US with a 100Gbps backbone, built with fibre-optics with Juniper routers providing the connectivity. Initially only open to a select few, commercial use shouldn’t take too long to arrive with plans to roll out to Los Angeles and a few other places in that area initially. [SHOW ME]

Pacman's Skull

So here it is, conclusive proof for the reason people love Pacman. He was, it turns out decended from Man as you can plainly see from the recent excavation of his skull from an Archaeological dig in Africa.

Nope I’m being stupid, of course it isn’t real. It’s interesting though what palaeontologists get up to when they’re bored. Check out the article on Boing Boing. [SHOW ME]

I was browsing through some of the excellent wallpaper for linux tonight on GNOME-Look.org when I realised there weren’t that many widescreen Ubuntu ones. I decided to create some and post them to the site for other users that are having the same problem..

Follow the link to see the wallpaper I’ve uploaded, but don’t stop there - make sure you explore the rest of the site too. [SHOW ME]

This technology has apparently been around since the 1980’s. It’s only now though that we’re going to start to see this being used in commercial systems by the end of this year! Ambitious? Perhaps, but one thing is for sure - it won’t be too soon! (I can’t wait to get my hands on this loaded up with a copy of Google Earth!)

Dell Monitor

From the steampunk workshop comes this neat mod to a standard Dell LCD screen.

With a bit of artistic flair, the monitor is transformed into something you might see in Thief. Also have a look at the guys keyboard too. [SHOW ME]

Because oil can’t conduct electricity, the theory goes you can submerge electrical appliances in it and they’ll still work. That’s the theory, now check out the practice (I think upgrades might be a bit messy though.!)
